Google have just announced their latest project, currently known as "Project Glass", which purpose is to provide you with technology when you need it - Completely hands free.

The concept video uploaded by Google today demonstrates how a similar device could be used in the future to make your manage your daily tasks and routine in a simple and fun way.

A user interface is added to the users vision using a small pair of funky looking glasses, the device allows the user to; plan a route using indoor and outdoor navigation, add events to their calendar as well as capturing and sharing photos.

Although it is uncertain exactly how the technology works at this stage, the demonstration shows all of the tasks being completed by following the users vision and listening to their voice commands.

Google have stated that the project is still in its early stages of development but the company would love to hear your feedback and ideas on their, possibly life changing concept.

You can share your ideas and thoughts about Google's Project Glass here

As was widely expected over the last few days, the announcement from the Raspberry Pi Foundation at the 6am press conference was the immediate release of the first batch of Raspberry Pi Model A boards. Needless to say we were hovering with our debit cards in hand but have so far been unable to purchase one due to demand. Disappointing for us, but good for the foundation.

We wish the Raspberry Pi foundation the best of luck with the project, we expect the first batch of 10,000 to sell out very quickly.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has manufacturer partnerships with RS Components and Premier Farnell, both are British companies which will be manufacturing and distributing the Raspberry Pi.

You can view the official announcement here!

Please be aware that you may have trouble viewing the website at first due to the large amount of traffic.

Best of luck to all those who are trying to get their hands on one. Why not visit our fan site for the Raspberry Pi and read up on what you can expect.

After years of wrangling over what the domain name extension for Wales should be, Nominet are finally preparing to release not 1 but 2 domain name extensions:

.wales will be for those English speaking Welsh organisations/people

.cymru will of course be for those who prefer the Welsh Language.

After having dual languages on road signs etc for years I suppose this was always likely to happen and has a good pedigree with the .cat (Catalan language domain extension) having over 50,000 domains registered.

Expect to use www.Orbits.wales to reach us in the future.....possibly!

For several years (since 2006) the website www.software4students.co.uk has been using a Microsoft Sales program to offer cheap (sometimes upto 90% off retail price) genuine Microsoft software. Things like Office 2010 Pro which would cost you nearly £300 retail can be had for £37.98 at the time of writing. These were available to students, parents and teachers but very few checks were placed to check this. However on their website they warn that the good times may be coming to an end:

Important Notice for S4S Customers!
Today we have an important annoucement for all of our S4S fans in relation to Microsoft products availability.
As many of you know, Software4Students has been offering the best discounts in Microsoft software for students and their parents since 2006.
Over the years, we have been offering discounts of up to 90%, for full versions of Microsoft software. However, Microsoft has recently announced that the programme that was making this possible will come to an end on March 31st, 2012.
We would like to take this opportunity to encourage all those who still do not have Windows 7 or Microsoft Office 2010 installed in their laptops or PCs to take advantage of this last chance to enjoy amazing discounts like the ones below.
As this programme ends soon you will need to hurry to secure your copy before we run out of them. So place your order now!!
The following products will no longer be available:
• Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010
• Microsoft Office Mac Standard 2011
• Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade
• Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade
• Microsoft Expression Web 4 & Studio 4 Professional
We will continue to work with Microsoft to explore future programmes and ensure that we continue to bring you the best value in software products. Please sign up to receive our newsletter and/or follow us on Facebook and Twitter in order to receive updated information on the new range or products.
If you have already purchased Microsoft Office and Windows 7 through Software4Students, why not share the news with your friends and family so that they, too, can save some money on Microsoft software?

If you are student or parent or teacher - or you don't care - then now may be the time to take advantage. Don;t forget though, if you are a charity you can still get upto 90% off Microsoft and others software at CTXchange - www.ctxchange.org.uk

The memory stick was unencrypted, meaning anyone that found the memory stick could access the data. We work with lots of charities and care providers so if you don't have policies and procedures in place for your staff to know what to do when they need to transfer data we can advise you. We can also work with you to implement industry standard data encryption, including USB memory sticks.

So don't risk ending up in the news for all the wrong reasons, give us a call and we'll help you with your data protection and compliance responsibilities.

Over the last few days I have been wrestling with a SBS2008 server which was having performance issues and VSS (Volume Snapshot Service) failures. Investigations showed the following sysmptoms:

Sluggish performance in Windows although CPU and RAM usages at normal levels.

Built in Server Backup fails with VSS Writer errors

VSS Writers section in registry is empty (not even the default Microsoft Vss Writer)

With the registry entries not being there, it became clear there was some corruption or failure of the inbuilt Microsoft VSS Writer. Recreating the vss writer should do the job I thought, but upon googling for a script I couldn't find one. There are plenty of posts about recreating them in 2003 but those scripts aren't valid. So I wrote my own which worked a treat. If you find yourself in the same situation try creating the script below as a batch (*.bat) file called SERVER2008VSSFIX.bat and run it with Administrative permissions.

As soon as the script ran the performance returned and I was able to take a backup successfully. Is always worth a reboot after performing this fix though.
