Raspberry Pi released but the world and his dog wants one!
As was widely expected over the last few days, the announcement from the Raspberry Pi Foundation at the 6am press conference was the immediate release of the first batch of Raspberry Pi Model A boards. Needless to say we were hovering with our debit cards in hand but have so far been unable to purchase one due to demand. Disappointing for us, but good for the foundation.
We wish the Raspberry Pi foundation the best of luck with the project, we expect the first batch of 10,000 to sell out very quickly.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation has manufacturer partnerships with RS Components and Premier Farnell, both are British companies which will be manufacturing and distributing the Raspberry Pi.
You can view the official announcement here!
Please be aware that you may have trouble viewing the website at first due to the large amount of traffic.
Best of luck to all those who are trying to get their hands on one. Why not visit our fan site for the Raspberry Pi and read up on what you can expect.
Nominet preparing to release .wales & .cymru domains
After years of wrangling over what the domain name extension for Wales should be, Nominet are finally preparing to release not 1 but 2 domain name extensions:
.wales will be for those English speaking Welsh organisations/people
.cymru will of course be for those who prefer the Welsh Language.
After having dual languages on road signs etc for years I suppose this was always likely to happen and has a good pedigree with the .cat (Catalan language domain extension) having over 50,000 domains registered.
Expect to use www.Orbits.wales to reach us in the future.....possibly!
Major outage for BT Business Broadband customers
Many of our clients were having internet connectivity issues this morning, after discovering that they were all BT customers we thought that we would give them a call.
BT confirmed that some of their Business customers will be experiencing problems connecting to the internet, effecting businesses all over the UK!
Glad to say that although the issues are still ongoing, all of our clients have now had their internet connection restored
You can check the current status of BT Business Broadband here
Don’t be a careless charity
The guardian reported yesterday about a care provider who lost a memory stick containing personal information about 160 individuals, including in some cases information about their mental health and care.
The memory stick was unencrypted, meaning anyone that found the memory stick could access the data. We work with lots of charities and care providers so if you don't have policies and procedures in place for your staff to know what to do when they need to transfer data we can advise you. We can also work with you to implement industry standard data encryption, including USB memory sticks.
So don't risk ending up in the news for all the wrong reasons, give us a call and we'll help you with your data protection and compliance responsibilities.
Raspberry-Pi – A fully featured computer for just $25 – its the future I tell thee!
We have been aware of the work of the Raspberry Pi foundation for over a year and it has been great to watch them go through the motions of creating a product that should, by all rights, revolutionise computing. As they near the launch of the fantastic Raspberry-Pi we have launched a fan site of our own to keep, those interested, up to date with developments and when we finally get our hands on some of the kit to show off the projects we do with it.
To start with here is a brief overview of the Raspberry Pi foundation and what they are doing:
- A registered UK Charity (1129409) formed to help schools, hobbyists and keen amateurs embrace Computer Science.
- Currently developing a low cost (~$25) ARM based Computer board.
- The beta boards are already being developed for and there is some amazing things to come (Quake 3 runs like a dream
) - Delivery of the first retail boards is expected in early 2012.
What does it mean for you?
Well it may mean nothing, or it may mean it changes your life forever. If you are like me you remember fondly the days of sitting in your bedroom typing BASIC programs into an Amstrad CPC 6128 and seeing what the end result was (or more likely spending the next day bug fixing Syntax Errors!). If that's the case then it could take you back to that time and allow the next generation to enjoy it to.
Check out our new site here: Raspberry-pi.co.uk and keep checking as we update it.

Orbits defy gravity for The Stroke Association
As many of you will know from this post Orbits signed up to take part in a sponsored Zip Line from the Newport Transporter Bridge, in aid of The Stroke Association. Unfortunately, Pete had to pull out due to a family commitment but Jim couldn't find a valid excuse not to do it and so it was that at 11am on Sunday the 10th of July, Jim found himself 50 metres up clinging on for dear life to whatever solid bit of metal he could find!
Orbits take to the skies for The Stroke Association – down, down and awaaaay!
On July 10th 2011, Orbits IT's directors (well one of them - the fat one!) will be joining many other brave souls in a charity zipline event to raise funds for The Stroke Association. Plummeting 300m off the Newport Transporter Bridge, and hopefully landing safely in Coronation Park, Jim and (Pete) Michelle Dally of Creating Media (because Pete is too chicken!) are hoping to raise in excess of £100 each to help the Stroke Association continue the excellent work they do.
If you would like to sponsor Orbits to plummet tothe ground, please use our JustGiving.com page:

A special thanks to Seren Evans of the Stroke Association who turned up to a 4Networking meeting, fluttered her eyelashes and convinced us to do this!
Good luck to all of Team Stroke South Wales!
